A Brief Note of Dr. M Asaduzzaman

Dr. M Asaduzzaman started his career as an Irrigation Engineer and ended as a Social Engineer. He retired from the position Of Executive Director, Barind Multipurpose Development Authority (BMDA) in 2007.  Mr. Zaman graduated in Engineering with a major in Irrigation and Water Management in 1972. Also did a Bachelor Of Law (LLB) and Ph.D in Agricultural Science. He attended the Executive Education Course at Harvard Business School, USA on Strategic Perspective for Non-Profit Management. Dr. Zaman engaged in consultancy works with the World Bank, CIDA, DFID, and ADB.

He has published over fifty technical papers and books, mostly on groundwater, wells, irrigation management, and cost recovery. He is a member of many national and international professional organizations that including the following:-

He has successfully developed a special technology for Tubewell Design called "Inverted Well" where the very shah thickness of the aquifer is available. He, with his highly skilled professional team members, has proved how a desert-like area (Barind) could be converted into a granary in Bangladesh against many preconceived negative ideas for tubewell irrigation. He introduced an appropriate irrigation cost recovery system using “Pre-paid meters and Smart cards in irrigation wells. He has proved that irrigation projects can be operated on a semi-financed basis.

The Barind Model of Irrigation in Bangladesh is appreciated very much for its appropriateness and the Government has decided to replicate this model for the whole of the country gradually and recently, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) strategically looking to replicate this irrigation Model in Bangladesh and beyond like Nepal and India.
